The government of Singapore is revising the Foreign-worker policies. The tightening of the policy is to encourage hiring companies to put Singaporean first. One of the instrument the manpower ministry used is raising the salary requirement of foreign professionals who are competing with Singaporean Middle-Managers and Executives to get jobs. The qualifying salary thresholds for Q1, P2, and P1 Passes were raised to S$2,800, S$4,000, and S$8,000 respectively. The prime minister cautioned that tightening on Foreign talent inflow does not mean Singaporean will get better jobs or higher pay, and that slowing down the inflow of foreign talent means slow economic growth.

There has been hot debate on the way professionals are hired in Singapore. In order to protect the growing number of Singaporean professionals being displaced by professional foreign talents amidst growing ratios of foreigner hires, the government is trying to fix this problem by proposing a Singaporeans-first policy. This means that if this policy is passed, companies in Singapore will have to consider Singaporeans first before hiring foreigners in the PMEs (Professionals, Managers, Executives) category. Measures include having to prove that employers were unable find the right Singaporean employee (by placing ads or getting employment agencies) before they are allowed to hire foreigners.
